Why Won’t My Garage Door Open?

September 13, 2024 9:57 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

It is usually one of two issues

FIRST – Look above your Garage Door
You will see a long tube with one large coil spring off-center or two coil springs in the middle of the tube. Look to see if the coil or coils are separated.

If so, the door can not open as it is too heavy for the operator to lift. At that point, you know you need to call for a spring replacement.

If all you see is a tube with NO springs visible: you have what is called a torc master set up where the springs are actually inside the tube. and if that is the case you want to pull the emergency release cord on the operator rail-releasing the door from the operator, then walk over to the door and try to lift it manually. Now if the door is very heavy it’s probable that one or both of the springs inside the tube has broken and this is the time to call for a spring replacement.

SECOND – The Operator
At times the operator settings start to get out of adjustment. It becomes weak and not able to lift the door, or perhaps the gears have been stripped. You can tell this by checking the chain or belt on the operator rail to see if it is loose or hanging down, and at that point, it’s time to call for help.

If you have no sound coming from your operator you’ll need to check your circuit breakers and GFI breakers first, and then make sure you do not have the lock switch on lock if you have a wall console.

We hope this was helpful. We’re always here to help and just a phone call away.
